Missouri prepares for elections amid tax proposals and maternity care closures

Missouri faces several significant developments ahead of the November 3 general election. Voters will decide on Amendment 7, a proposal to establish a permanent public endowment fund designed to eventually eliminate state income taxes through long-term compound interest.

Election officials are currently addressing confusion regarding congressional district boundaries. Following a Missouri Supreme Court ruling, authorities must use maps from the 2022 and 2024 elections rather than the boundaries used in the August primary. This shift has caused discrepancies in voter assignments, particularly in Boone County.

In Douglas County, early voting is underway for various local, state, and federal races. Meanwhile, in Marshall, the closure of maternity services at Fitzgibbon Hospital—now renamed Missouri Valley Regional Medical Center—highlights a growing trend of disappearing rural maternity care across the state.

According to a March of Dimes report, more than half of Missouri’s counties lack local labor and delivery services or obstetric clinicians. Patients previously served by the Marshall facility will now need to travel 30 minutes to over an hour to reach nearby hospitals in Sedalia or Warrensburg.
