Missouri raises rural highway speed limits to 75 mph

Missouri has enacted legislation to increase the maximum speed limit from 70 to 75 mph on specific rural interstates and freeways. Governor Mike Kehoe signed Senate Bill 1408, which was proposed by Republican State Senator Jamie Burger.

The new limits will not apply to urban highways. Instead, the increase is targeted at rural sections of major routes, with the I-70 and I-49 corridors near Kansas City identified as primary candidates.

While the law officially takes effect on August 28, 2026, motorists may not see changes on the road for a significant period. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) must first conduct technical evaluations to ensure specific road segments can safely accommodate higher speeds. Due to the time required for safety reviews and the installation of new signage, the actual implementation of the 75-mph limits could be delayed until late 2026 or even 2027.
