U.S. Supreme Court blocks Missouri's new congressional map
The U.S. Supreme Court has intervened in a legal dispute over Missouri’s congressional districts, blocking a new map favored by Republicans and President Donald Trump. The Court’s unsigned order stayed a federal judge’s ruling that had required the state to use the 2025 map for the upcoming November elections.
As a result, Missouri will revert to using its 2022 congressional map for the November general election. This decision follows a period of intense legal conflict between state and federal courts. The 2025 map, which was drawn following encouragement from Trump, would have likely increased Republican representation, potentially reducing Democratic seats to just one.
Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins was previously found in contempt by the Missouri Supreme Court for directing election officials to use the 2025 map against state court orders. However, Hoskins has since “purged” himself of the contempt by complying with the state high court's directive to use the 2022 boundaries. The legal battle originated from a referendum petition by the group People Not Politicians, which gathered over 300,000 signatures to challenge the new map.
