Missouri storms cause widespread power outages and trigger state insurance guidance

Severe thunderstorms swept across central Missouri over the July 4 weekend, producing wind gusts of up to 80 mph. The storms knocked down power poles and trees, leaving more than 5,000 Ameren Missouri customers without electricity in Camden, Miller, Morgan, Cole and Osage counties. Utility crews expected to finish restoring power by Tuesday, while public works teams cleared debris and closed Osage City to the public for cleanup.

In response to the damage, the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance issued a consumer‑help guide. Director Angela Nelson urged residents to (1) inspect and document property loss, (2) take steps to prevent further damage, and (3) file insurance claims promptly. The department provided a 24‑hour hotline and a post‑disaster claims guide to assist homeowners navigating their policies, including coverage details for fallen trees, docks and power‑outage food spoilage.
