Missouri thunderstorms cause widespread power outages and road restrictions

A series of strong thunderstorms moved through the Kansas City metropolitan area and surrounding counties in Missouri on the night of July 3 and early July 4, 2026. The storms produced wind gusts of 50‑55 mph and pea‑size hail, prompting multiple Special Weather Statements and a brief Severe Thunderstorm Warning from the National Weather Service. The severe weather affected dozens of communities, including Excelsior Springs, Cameron, Smithville, and others, as well as major interstate corridors such as I‑35, I‑70, I‑29 and I‑435.

The storms knocked down power lines and trees across mid‑Missouri, leaving more than 22,500 customers without electricity. In Osage City, authorities limited access to the city to property owners until power could be restored, while the wider region faced extensive restoration work by Ameren and mutual‑assistance crews. The utility warned that full service could take several days to return, with power still out in many areas as of Sunday.

Officials urged residents to secure loose outdoor items and remain cautious of downed limbs, while power crews continued efforts to restore electricity throughout the affected counties.
