Mistral CEO criticizes U.S. AI safety debate as cover for negligence

Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch has criticized the ongoing artificial intelligence safety debate in the United States, suggesting it serves as a cover for the "negligence" of major competitors. Mensch noted that AI agents with access to various tools can behave in unexpected and dynamic ways, necessitating robust monitoring systems.

Mensch emphasized the importance of Europe developing its own AI capabilities to avoid becoming dependent on foreign technology providers, a situation he warned could lead to an "extractive economy." He stated that while U.S. labs currently hold a lead, the gap is not extremely large and Mistral's next-generation models aim to close it significantly.

To support this growth, Mistral recently raised 3 billion euros in funding, led by Samsung, valuing the company at approximately 21 billion euros. Unlike competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic, Mistral focuses on creating custom AI tools integrated with specific business needs.
