MIT and MFA Use 3D Scanning to Recreate Ancient Instrument Sounds

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston have developed a method to reproduce the sound of ancient musical instruments without harming the originals. By employing an industrial computed‑tomography (CT) scanner, they capture detailed internal structures of fragile artifacts, generate digital 3D models, and print replica instruments that can be played safely.

The first public demonstration featured a Paracas‑culture whistle, presented at an MIT event in November 2025. The team has already scanned about thirty objects and aims to reach a hundred, eventually extending the technique to wooden instruments such as violins. The approach promises more accurate acoustic reconstructions for scholars and audiences alike.
