MIT launches new program for interdisciplinary AI education

MIT’s Common Ground program has launched a new initiative to transform artificial intelligence education by focusing on real-world application and interdisciplinary integration. Led by professor Asu Ozdaglar, the program aims to move beyond theoretical concepts like reinforcement learning and backpropagation to teach AI ‘in praxis.’

The initiative seeks to develop ‘computing bilinguals’—students who are proficient in both computing languages and the specific languages of their chosen academic disciplines. By providing context and connecting AI concepts to specific problems, the program intends to empower students to become critical thinkers rather than mere users of technology.

Saurabh Amin, faculty director of the AI Educators Pilot, noted that a primary challenge is the scarcity of instructor capacity. The program addresses the need for computing education across various disciplines, treating it as a conceptual framework rather than just a functional tool.
