MIT ranked as top U.S. university in 2026 U.S. News rankings

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been named the top university in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report rankings, ending Princeton University’s 15-year streak at the number one position.

The shift in rankings is attributed to a change in methodology that places greater emphasis on the earnings of graduates by major. MIT performed particularly well under this new metric, which tracks the earnings of federal financial-aid recipients four years after they earn a bachelor’s degree.

In addition to the top overall ranking, MIT secured the number one spot in several specific categories, including undergraduate engineering, computer science, and economics. Its undergraduate business program was ranked second. The Institute also placed first for undergraduate research and creative projects, second for most innovative schools, and third for best value schools.

Other institutions saw movement due to the new emphasis on earnings; the California Institute of Technology rose to number five, while Carnegie Mellon University climbed to number 14. The ranking update comes amid declining public confidence in higher education, with Gallup data indicating that only 38% of Americans express high confidence in U.S. higher education.
