MIT researchers announce breakthrough in solid-state battery safety

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Technical University of Munich have announced a breakthrough in solid-state battery technology. The development addresses a critical safety issue: the formation of microscopic lithium metal growths, known as dendrites, which can cause short circuits, overheating, and fires during rapid charging.

In current solid-state designs, electrical charges accumulate at the boundaries between microscopic ceramic crystals, causing lithium to form needle-like structures that pierce the electrolyte. By modifying the manufacturing process of the ceramic material, scientists have successfully minimized these negative charges. This adjustment allows the battery to handle over 300 percent higher electrical current without the risk of destructive dendrite growth or short circuits.

This advancement could pave the way for electric vehicles with significantly longer ranges and much faster charging capabilities, overcoming a major technical barrier to the mass production of solid-state batteries.
