MIT researchers develop framework for fusion energy economics

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new framework designed to assess the economic viability of nuclear fusion power plants. Published in the Journal of Fusion Energy, the study proposes ten specific parameters to evaluate whether fusion can become a commercially competitive energy source.

The framework is technology-agnostic, meaning it can be applied to various fusion approaches regardless of specific technical designs. It considers both scientific and physical inputs, such as energy production versus consumption, alongside engineering and economic factors like plant construction costs, power density, component durability, and the efficiency of converting fusion power into marketable products.

Co-author and MIT professor Dennis Whyte emphasized that for fusion technology to be meaningful in the global economy, researchers must address these economic realities directly. The study highlights that low-cost financing will be essential for the success of future fusion power plants and notes the importance of managing the replacement costs and frequency of reaction control surfaces.
