MIT researchers find pink noise can boost brain fluid flow during sleep
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have demonstrated that brief pulses of pink noise can increase the amplitude of cerebrospinal fluid flow during sleep. The study, published in Science Translational Medicine, shows that acoustic stimulation modulates slow electrical brain waves, which in turn promotes the expansion of fluid flows.
To achieve this effect, the team used 50-millisecond bursts of pink noise—a balanced sound similar to steady rain with more emphasis on lower frequencies. Senior author Laura Lewis, an associate professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, noted that while the technology has been successful in healthy adults, the next step is to test its effects on clinical populations.
