MIT study finds pink noise can enhance brain waste clearance during sleep
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have discovered that specific acoustic stimulation can enhance the brain's natural waste-clearing process during sleep. According to a study published in Science Translational Medicine, applying 50-millisecond bursts of “pink noise” at precise moments during deep non-REM sleep can amplify slow brain waves.
These amplified waves, in turn, increase the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This fluid movement is essential for the glymphatic system, which flushes metabolic waste products—such as lactic acid and damaged proteins—from the brain. While the study does not claim to cure Alzheimer's disease, it provides a potential mechanism for combating the accumulation of proteins like beta-amyloid and tau, which are associated with neurodegenerative conditions.
Lead researcher Laura Lewis noted that the timing of the stimulus is critical, comparing the process to pushing a child on a swing at the exact right moment to increase height. The team aims to transition this technology from healthy adult trials to clinical populations to explore its therapeutic potential.
