MIT researchers study how spacecraft design affects astronaut mental health

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Colorado Boulder have conducted a study investigating how spacecraft design influences the mental, emotional, and social health of astronauts. The research maps the connections between habitat features—such as lighting, privacy, and living area layouts—and psychological experiences including anxiety, fatigue, homesickness, and crew interpersonal relationships.

As space exploration shifts toward long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars, the study aims to provide engineers with tools to prioritize crew well-being during the design phase. The researchers noted that while extreme environments like submarines or Antarctic stations are often designed primarily for physical survival, the psychological pressures of isolation, confinement, and disrupted circadian rhythms must be addressed to ensure crews remain healthy, safe, and productive.
