Mitch McConnell criticizes Trump’s approach to Russia-Ukraine war

Senator Mitch McConnell has issued a sharp critique of President Trump’s strategy to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In an op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal, McConnell argued that attempting to end the war by “coddling” Russian President Vladimir Putin and limiting assistance to Kyiv is “certain to fail.”

McConnell characterized the administration’s approach as “factually wrong, strategically naive and morally bankrupt,” specifically disputing Trump’s claims that Russia has been cooperative regarding energy ceasefires. He warned that rewarding Russia with sanctions relief and threatening to withhold security, intelligence, or satellite communications access could embolden Putin rather than persuade him to stop.

Furthermore, McConnell cautioned that slowing military aid might allow Russia to make battlefield gains that were previously out of reach, potentially prolonging the war. He also criticized a recent deal to import Russian diesel into the United States, noting that such moves do little to lower domestic fuel prices and may imperil legislative agendas in Congress.
