The Washington Post examined the photo’s metadata and consulted digital‑forensics professor Hany Farid. The analysis showed the picture was taken on Sunday and found no signs of manipulation, with the Post stating there was “no evidence that the image is fake.”

McConnell’s office later released a statement confirming he was hospitalized after a fall on June 14, suffered a mild case of pneumonia, and has moved to a rehabilitation center. He said he is not yet cleared to return to Capitol Hill and will retire at the end of his term in January.
