Conservative commentator Scott Jennings reported having a direct phone call with the 84-year-old senator on August 11. Jennings stated that McConnell appeared to be in an “improving position” and was actively engaged in political discussions, including the Michigan Senate race, the farm bill, and the Senate filibuster. Jennings suggested McConnell hopes to return to his duties when lawmakers reconvene in September.

Reporters attempting to seek updates from McConnell’s Chief of Staff, Terry Carmack, and his in-home caregivers at his Washington, D.C., residence have reportedly been met with silence or avoidance.
