Mitch McConnell returns to Senate after three-month medical absence
Senator Mitch McConnell returned to the U.S. Senate on Monday, September 14, 2026, marking his first appearance in the chamber after a three-month absence. The 84-year-old Republican from Kentucky arrived in a wheelchair and cast his first vote since June, approving a federal district court judge nomination for southern Ohio.
McConnell’s absence followed a June 14 fall at his Washington-area home that left him briefly unconscious. During his recovery, he was treated for mild pneumonia and underwent physical therapy. He noted that his recovery has been complicated by the lingering effects of childhood polio. His extended absence had previously prompted calls from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear for transparency regarding his fitness for office.
In a statement, McConnell expressed his intention to focus on key legislative priorities, including the pending farm bill and maintaining support for NATO. He informed Senate Majority Leader John Thune that he would do his best to be present for critical votes despite not being at 100% capacity. McConnell, who has served in Congress for over four decades, is scheduled to retire at the end of the current term in January.
