His prolonged absence has reduced the Republican Senate majority to an effective 52 votes, stalling key legislation such as defense appropriations, the farm bill and the SAVE America voting‑integrity measure. GOP senators, including Josh Hawley, have demanded greater transparency, with Hawley noting “We’re at 52” Republican votes. Calls have been made for Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear to intervene, and some Republicans are urging term‑limit reforms. A Louisville Courier‑Journal columnist published a pre‑obituary, describing McConnell as “detestable” and “never paid for his sins.” The situation continues to impede Senate committees, leaving a 14‑14 split on the Appropriations Committee and threatening a potential government shutdown.
