Mitchell Kerfoot sentenced for Grafton arson attack
Mitchell Kerfoot has been sentenced to a two-year intensive corrections order by the Downing Centre District Court for a 2024 arson attack in Grafton. The attack, described by Judge Robert Newlinds SC as an “extremely serious” crime, involved Kerfoot burning down his ex-partner’s home using an ignitable liquid.
The fire resulted in the destruction of the residence and the deaths of several cats. No people were inside the home at the time of the blaze. Investigators linked Kerfoot to the crime through CCTV footage of a figure entering the property and DNA evidence found in the form of hairs from a beanie abandoned near the scene.
Judge Newlinds noted that the offense occurred within the context of a volatile and “utterly dysfunctional” relationship, fueled by alcohol use and mental health issues. At the time of the arson, Kerfoot was already serving a community corrections order for a previous offense involving a weapon.
