Mithila region celebrates traditional Jhulanotsav Swing Festival
The traditional Jhulanotsav, also known as the Swing Festival, has commenced in the Mithila region. The celebration began on Saturday with the start of Shukla Tritiya in the month of Shrawan.
Dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, the festival features idols of their incarnations, including Ram and Sita, and Radha and Krishna, placed on elaborately decorated swings. Devotees participate by rocking the swings while singing devotional songs.
The festivities have brought a festive atmosphere to temples and monasteries across Mithila, particularly in Mahottari. Gatherings of devotees and saints are reported at the Ram Janaki, Lakshminarayan, and Radhakrishna temples, as well as various Vaishnav monasteries.
Dr Rabindradas Vaishnav, successor Mahant of the Lakshminarayan Monastery in Matihani, noted that the festival is a significant occasion for devotion, cultural expression, and entertainment within the Maithil Hindu tradition. The event formally began in Matihani with a procession carrying the idols of Lakshminarayan to a swing house.
The festival is scheduled to conclude on the full moon day of Saun.
