MITR Hospital performs advanced robotic surgery for rare Crohn’s complication

Surgeons at MITR Hospital in Navi Mumbai, India, have successfully performed advanced robotic multi-specialty surgery to treat a rare complication of Crohn’s disease.

The patient, a man in his late 30s, suffered from an ileo-vesical fistula, a condition where chronic inflammation caused an abnormal tunnel to form between the bowel and the urinary bladder. This complication resulted in the passage of gas and fecal matter through the urine.

A joint team of urological and gastrointestinal surgeons utilized a robotic system featuring magnified 3D vision and high-precision instruments to perform the procedure through small keyhole incisions. This approach allowed the team to remove the diseased bowel segment, close the opening in the bladder, and reconstruct the bladder wall while avoiding the extensive scarring and risks associated with conventional laparoscopy or major open surgery.
