MitroRun 2026 race crosses North Mitrovica despite municipal opposition

The MitroRun 2026 street race took place today, crossing from South Mitrovica into North Mitrovica despite formal opposition from the North Mitrovica municipality. Approximately 800 participants, including children and adults, followed a route that utilized the new bridge and several streets in the northern part of the city.

North Mitrovica officials stated they were not consulted regarding the event and had not granted permission for the race to use their territory. The municipality characterized the event as a ‘political project of institutions in Pristina’ intended to undermine its local authority and administrative boundaries.

During the event, Kosovo Police detained one individual for a statement deemed potentially provocative, though the person was released shortly after questioning. One runner was also disqualified. Despite the municipal dispute and the presence of significant police forces, authorities reported that the event proceeded without major incidents to public order.
