Mitsera residents protest asphalt plant relocation

Residents and representatives from eight communities are protesting the relocation of an asphalt plant from Cheri to Mitsera. The affected areas include Mitsera, Agrokipia, Malouda, Arediou, Agios Ioannis, Kato Moni, Oronta, and Meniko.

On Sunday, members of the 'Communities in Action' group held a demonstration at the Agios Ioannis – Kato Moni road, where construction for the new unit has already commenced. Protesters are seeking a legal injunction to halt the works. A decision from the Supreme Court regarding the request for suspension is expected on Monday.

Agrokipia Mayor Sotiris Kyriakou stated that the region is already heavily burdened by over one hundred industrial developments, including quarries, slaughterhouses, and livestock and poultry units. He noted that while over €30 million in funding was previously approved for a wastewater treatment plant to alleviate regional pressure, the project was never completed by state officials.
