Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group advances decarbonization technologies

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group companies have announced two technological developments aimed at decarbonization in the shipping and power generation sectors.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has received an order from Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine for its MAmmoSS® ammonia fuel handling system. The system is designed to be compatible with ammonia marine engines from licensors Everllence SE and WinGD. As the International Maritime Organization works toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by 2050, ammonia is being positioned as a key next-generation fuel due to its lack of CO2 emissions during combustion. The MAmmoSS® system focuses on the safe handling of ammonia, which is a toxic fluid.

Separately, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine & Turbocharger, Ltd. (MHIET) has established hydrogen co-firing specifications for its KU Series gas engines, which range from 3.65 MW to 5.75 MW in power output. These specifications allow engines to operate using hydrogen alongside natural gas while maintaining stable combustion across varying loads. The technology utilizes computational fluid dynamics to suppress issues like knocking and pre-ignition. The system offers flexibility, allowing operators to adjust hydrogen ratios based on fuel availability and enabling existing natural gas installations to be upgraded for hydrogen use.
