Mitsui Fudosan and Ashirase launch indoor navigation in Nihonbashi

Mitsui Fudosan and the startup Ashirase have launched ‘IndoorFlow’, an indoor navigation service, in the Nihonbashi area of Tokyo. The service began operating on October 1, covering the Mitsukoshimae Station underground passages and six connected commercial facilities, including COREDO Muromachi 1, 2, 3, and Terrace, Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower, and YUITO.

IndoorFlow utilizes Visual Positioning System (VPS) technology, which uses smartphone cameras to recognize surroundings. This allows for high-precision positioning in underground or indoor environments where GPS signals are typically weak. The system provides guidance through augmented reality (AR), voice instructions, and vibrations, tailored to the user's needs.

To ensure inclusivity, the companies conducted tests with 42 visually impaired and wheelchair users. The tests resulted in a 100 percent destination arrival rate, with 88 percent of participants reporting reduced anxiety regarding movement. The service offers specific features such as barrier-free routes for wheelchair users and multi-language support for international visitors.

The implementation aims to improve urban accessibility and connectivity. Future plans include expanding the service to the Yaesu and Tokyo Station areas, as well as supporting MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) activities by connecting stations, underground paths, and event venues.
