Mitsunari Okamoto elected as new leader of Komeito

Mitsunari Okamoto has been elected as the new leader of the Komeito party, succeeding Toshiko Takeya. The appointment was officially confirmed during the party convention on October 3. Under the new leadership, Komeito aims to strengthen its centrist political identity and expand cooperation across party lines.

Okamoto’s appointment has drawn public scrutiny due to past remarks. In February, while part of the Centrist Reform Union, he stated he would likely resign from politics if the centrist movement ceased to exist, even suggesting he would not return to his former party. Following the dissolution of the Centrist Reform Union in September, Okamoto returned to Komeito. He has addressed these contradictions by stating his previous comments were “clumsy” and were intended to express his commitment to the principle of centrism rather than a specific party name.

In his inaugural address, Okamoto outlined several policy stances, including opposition to certain consumption tax reduction plans and calls for better support for those excluded from income-linked benefits. He also expressed a commitment to discussing the possibility of female emperors and voiced strong opposition to any revisions of Japan’s non-nuclear three principles.
