Miulli Hospital performs first tricuspid valve implant in Puglia

Medical teams at the F. Miulli Hospital in Acquaviva delle Fonti have performed the first tricuspid valve replacement in the Puglia region using a minimally invasive technique. The procedure involved implanting an EVOQUE biological prosthesis without opening the patient's chest or stopping the heart.

The patient, a 74-year-old woman suffering from severe tricuspid insufficiency and chronic heart failure, was treated via a catheter introduced through the femoral vein in the groin area. This method avoids the need for extracorporeal circulation and traditional open-heart surgery, offering a therapeutic option for high-risk patients.

The intervention was carried out by the hospital's Structural Interventional Cardiology team, including cardiologists Katya Lucarelli and Vito Casamassima, with assistance from echocardiography experts Federica Troisi and Vincenzo Bellomo, anesthesiologist Gisella Caracciolo, and hemodynamics technical staff. Following the successful procedure, the patient was discharged in good clinical condition after five days.
