Mixed Martial Arts debuts at Asian Games in Japan
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is making its debut at the Asian Games in Japan, marking a significant milestone in the sport's pursuit of Olympic recognition. Organizers view this inclusion as proof of the sport's established governance, rulesets, and athlete participation levels.
Unlike the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which utilizes an octagonal cage, the Asian Games competition takes place on mats without a fence. Galastein Tan, director general of the Federation of International Mixed Martial Arts, noted that a cage does not align with Olympic values, necessitating this adaptation for competitors.
Athletes from nations with strong combat sports traditions, including Japan, Thailand, Kazakhstan, and the Philippines, are participating in the event. Competitors suggest that formal recognition at the continental and Olympic levels will help expand the global talent pool.
