Mixed reactions to operatic performances in Düsseldorf and Leipzig

Recent operatic performances in Germany have drawn diverse audience responses. At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, the premiere of Richard Wagner’s ‘Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg’ faced mixed reviews. While guest conductor Christoph Gedschold and the Düsseldorf Symphony received acclaim for the musical execution, Daniel Kramer’s production received criticism. To avoid historical associations with National Socialist ideology, the staging moved the setting from Nuremberg to the Düsseldorf central station and included a sequence set in the year 2035.

In Leipzig, the Gewandhausorchester hosted a rare concertante performance of Kurt Weill’s ‘Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny’. This marked a historical novelty for the orchestra’s 345-year history. Led by HK Gruber, the performance focused on the musicality of the work, though the lack of traditional staging and the requirement to access the libretto via QR code presented challenges for some attendees. Despite these factors, the audience reaction was generally positive.
