Miyagi Prefecture Board of Education proposes high school restructuring

The Miyagi Prefectural Board of Education held an opinion exchange meeting in Ishinomaki to discuss a plan to consolidate public high schools. Under the ‘High School Future Vision Implementation Plan,’ the board aims to reduce the number of full-time high schools from 68 to 38 by fiscal year 2039.

In the eastern district, which includes Ishinomaki and Tome, the plan proposes consolidating 11 current full-time schools into five. This move is driven by projections that the number of high school students in the area will be halved by 2039. The board stated the restructuring is necessary to ensure adequate school scale and improve the quality of education.

Local residents and educators expressed significant concerns during the meeting. Participants highlighted risks such as regional decline, reduced educational opportunities, and the potential for students to migrate to the Sendai area. Concerns were also raised regarding the increased burden on students to fulfill multiple roles in extracurricular activities due to shrinking student bodies. In response, the board suggested using online tools to support inter-school collaboration and expanding flexible scheduling models to maintain diverse educational options locally.
