Mizoram CM Lalduhoma faces backlash over ILP, peace accord comments

Chief Minister Lalduhoma of Mizoram said the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system could be withdrawn by the central government and described the 1986 Mizoram Accord as an agreement between the Union Home Ministry and a political party rather than between the state and India. The Mizoram Pradesh Youth Congress Committee condemned the remarks, warning they could erode public confidence in the ILP amid concerns over illegal immigration and questioning the chief minister’s claim of receiving a U.S. Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award.

The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) also demanded a public apology, calling Lalduhoma’s statements factually incorrect and harmful to Mizoram’s ethnic unity and security. The MNF set a deadline of August 15 for the chief minister to retract or correct his comments and warned of a possible statewide bandh if the demand is not met.
