Mizoram government addresses reimbursement rate controversy in healthcare scheme
The Mizoram government has responded to allegations of preferential treatment regarding reimbursement rates within the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS). Following reports that Synod Hospital, a church-run institution, receives more generous reimbursement terms than other empanelled hospitals, the Health and Family Welfare department issued a notification stating that any non-empanelled hospital with facilities comparable to Synod Hospital may join the scheme at those same rates.
Health Minister Lalrinpuii defended the arrangement, explaining that Synod Hospital was granted ‘silver-grade status’ due to its 350-bed capacity, specialized equipment, and quality of healthcare. She noted that hospitals are graded based on infrastructure and medical specialties, making direct rate comparisons with lower-grade facilities inaccurate. The Minister also stated that Synod Hospital underwent extensive negotiations and agreed to reduce several proposed rates before joining.
The MUHCS, a flagship program of the Zoram People’s Movement government, provides cashless treatment to over 3.2 lakh enrolled families. The scheme has disbursed more than Rs 271 crore in treatment bills across its two phases. Beneficiaries include general citizens, government employees, and pensioners, with coverage levels varying based on contribution types and ward preferences.
