Mizoram seeks UN cooperation and central aid to boost disaster resilience and relief

Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Prof Lalnilawma of Mizoram met Kumar Kishore, the United Nations Secretary‑General’s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, in New Delhi. The talks focused on expanding technical cooperation, knowledge exchange and support for the state’s disaster preparedness, including the development of Thenzawl as a “Peace City” and the planned North‑East Regional Disaster Management Conclave.

The state also appealed to the central government for enhanced calamity assistance. It requested that African Swine Fever be classified as a notified disaster under the State Disaster Relief Fund, citing losses of Rs 114.64 crore for pig farmers in 2025. Additional demands included Rs 21 crore for landslide rehabilitation in Lawngtlai and Chandmari, Rs 95.76 crore for Phase‑I of the National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Programme, and Rs 50 crore for the National Landslide Risk Mitigation Programme. Mizoram’s Post‑Disaster Needs Assessment estimates physical damage at Rs 644.71 crore, economic losses at Rs 645.49 crore, and a total recovery requirement of Rs 873.22 crore.
