Tamil Nadu CM Vijay faces political friction with DMK

Tamil Nadu politics is marked by increasing tension between Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK-led government and the opposition DMK. DMK leader MK Stalin has criticized the Chief Minister for treating the State Assembly like a “cinema set” and focusing on dramatic “punch dialogues” rather than substantive governance. Stalin also accused the administration of merely renaming welfare schemes previously introduced by the DMK.

Further friction has emerged over a government proposal to provide free cars and monthly allowances to all 234 MLAs. The DMK has rejected the offer, with Udhayanidhi Stalin citing the state’s growing debt crisis and questioning the necessity of the scheme. The opposition has called for an investigation into MLAs' financial affidavits to ensure such benefits only reach those in genuine need.

Amidst these political disputes, the TVK government reports a perceived reduction in high-level corruption during its first 100 days, with various industry sectors noting a decrease in demands for ‘cut payments.’ However, officials note that structural changes are still required to address bribery at the local administrative level. Meanwhile, the CPM has announced a six-day statewide outreach campaign to engage with citizens regarding the government’s performance.
