Mkango Magnetic Materials outlines US rare earth magnet expansion

Mkango Magnetic Materials has announced the results of an independent pre-feasibility study for HyProMag USA, detailing a major expansion of rare earth magnet manufacturing in the United States. The proposed strategy involves developing three new regional production plants and a centralized manufacturing and technology hub in Central Texas, supplementing the existing Northlake, Texas facility.

The expansion aims to quadruple annual neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnet production capacity to approximately 4,192 metric tons by 2034. The project targets a total salable material production of roughly 6,000 metric tons per year by that time, utilizing both primary alloy material and end-of-life recycled feedstock.

Economic projections for the three new plants indicate an incremental post-tax net present value (NPV) between US$1.85 billion and US$2.06 billion, with internal rates of return (IRR) estimated between 31% and 36%. The total combined project valuation for the four-plant platform is estimated at US$2.6 billion to US$2.8 billion. Capital expenditure for the expansion is projected to be between US$623 million and US$656 million.
