MKO documentary on Moshood Abiola set for October premiere
Filmmaker Ose Oyamendan’s documentary, ‘MKO’, is scheduled for a nationwide cinema release in Nigeria on 2 October. The film chronicles the life and legacy of Moshood ‘MKO’ Abiola, a prominent businessman and politician who was central to the historic 12 June 1993 presidential election.
The documentary explores the annulment of that election by the military government, the subsequent political struggles, and the circumstances surrounding Abiola’s death while in detention in 1998. The premiere will take place on 1 October at the National Theatre in Lagos, with President Bola Tinubu serving as the chief host.
Featuring a wide range of historical figures, the film includes former military leaders Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, and Abiola’s running mate, Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe. It also includes accounts from international diplomats and family members, providing an intimate look at a defining chapter in Nigeria’s modern political history.
