Málaga CF celebrates promotion to La Liga with massive street rallies

Málaga CF secured promotion to Spain’s top‑flight after a 2‑1 playoff win over UD Almería, ending an eight‑year absence from Primera División. The provincial government, the city hall and the Diputación formally received the club to mark the historic achievement.

The celebration swept the city, with estimates of 185,000‑200,000 residents lining the streets. Fans followed the team on an open‑air bus through landmarks such as La Rosaleda, the church of San Pablo and the Divina Pastora square, while officials including mayor Francisco de la Torre and provincial president addressed the crowd. A procession also paid homage to the patron saint of sport in Málaga.

During the final moments of the rally, a firework projectile struck a 19‑month‑old girl, causing burns to her arm. Her mother, Patricia, recounted: “A piece of a firecracker flew over the crowd and landed on my daughter’s head, setting her shirt alight and burning her arm.” Police identified two spectators linked to the incident.
