Fulham refuses penalty shootout in controversial match against Málaga

A pre-season friendly between Fulham and Málaga CF at La Rosaleda ended in controversy during the 36th edition of the Costa del Sol Trophy. The match concluded in a 2-2 draw after Eneko Jauregi scored a penalty in the 90th minute to equalize for Málaga.

Following the equalizer, Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa was sent off for protesting the decision. The English club subsequently refused to participate in a penalty shootout to decide the winner. Fulham stated that the match contract did not include a shootout and expressed concerns regarding their travel schedule to the airport.

Málaga contested this claim, asserting that a shootout had been planned. In the absence of the Fulham players, Málaga players performed a penalty into an empty net to celebrate, and the Spanish club was declared the winner of the trophy.
