Málaga faces housing crisis with 13,500 families on waiting list
Málaga is facing a significant housing crisis, with 13,500 families currently on waiting lists for protected housing. This demand is more than double the existing supply. While the city is expected to have the third-largest public housing park in Spain by the end of the year—following Madrid and Barcelona—the numbers still fail to meet the urgent needs of the population.
The local government advocates for increasing supply through more land and both public and private promotions, while opposing direct market intervention. Conversely, opposition groups and tenant collectives are calling for stricter limits on tourist apartments and the implementation of price control measures. This housing shortage is impacting not only local residents but also the competitiveness of businesses struggling to house their employees.
