Málaga hospital staff protest new temporary parking rates

Healthcare professionals at the Hospital Civil and Materno-Infantil in Málaga are expressing significant dissatisfaction following the opening of a new temporary parking facility. The facility, which provides 750 spaces, is a temporary measure during the construction of the future Hospital Regional Virgen de la Esperanza and is expected to remain in use until at least April 2027.

Staff members have raised concerns regarding the sharp increase in costs. Under the previous system, workers paid approximately 0.80 euros per day, totaling about 16 euros per month. Under the new management, while Andalusian Health Service (SAS) professionals can access a discounted rate of 0.61 euros per hour, they are limited to just 163 reserved spaces available on a first-come, first-served basis. For those unable to secure a reserved spot, standard hourly rates range between 1.36 and 1.63 euros, which could result in monthly costs approaching 100 euros for staff working regular shifts.

Trade unions and staff have warned that the limited number of subsidized spaces and the new pricing structure could lead to delays in staff arriving for shifts, potentially impacting patient care and medical handovers.
