Málaga Province Faces Heat Alerts and Fog as Terral Wind Arrives

The coastal city of Málaga and surrounding towns experienced a dense maritime fog known locally as “taró” on Friday, the first occurrence of this summer. The fog, caused by a sharp temperature difference between the sea and easterly breezes, was especially thick in Málaga city and Rincón de la Victoria and is expected to return overnight and on Saturday morning.

At the same time, a fourth heatwave pushed interior areas such as Vega de Antequera, the Serranía de Ronda and the Guadalhorce Valley toward record temperatures. The Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET) issued an amber alert for temperatures up to 40 °C in Antequera and a yellow alert for the coastal Axarquía region. On Sunday and Monday, the “terral” wind is forecast to bring further heat to the coast, with orange alerts for Málaga city, the western coast and the Guadalhorce Valley as maximums of 38‑41 °C are expected. By Tuesday the alerts are set to be lifted.

The town of Fuente de Piedra recorded the province’s highest temperature on Saturday, reaching 41.9 °C, while other municipalities such as Álora, Cortes de la Frontera and Ronda saw temperatures near 39‑40 °C. Overall, the province is dealing with a stark contrast between cooler inland conditions and intense heat along the coast.
