Málaga University AI Tool Maps Intestinal Virome to Detect Digestive Health Imbalance
Researchers at the University of Málaga, together with the National Technical University of Ukraine and the Institute of Biomedical Research of Málaga (IBIMA), have created a digital platform that uses artificial intelligence to analyse the viral communities in the human gut. The system processes public virome datasets, classifies viral families and abundances, and generates maps that differentiate healthy profiles from those linked to digestive disorders. In validation tests the AI models achieved up to 87 % accuracy in distinguishing balanced versus imbalanced intestinal viromes. The authors suggest the approach could eventually support biomedical diagnostics by identifying viral biomarkers of gut health.
The study, published in *Current Bioinformatics*, remains in a preliminary research phase and is not yet intended for clinical use.
