MLB announces spring training schedule amid labor negotiations

Major League Baseball has announced the spring training schedule for all 30 teams, with exhibition games set to begin on February 19. However, the schedule remains contingent on labor peace between MLB management and the players’ association.

The current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire on December 1. A potential lockout could freeze offseason trades and signings if a new deal is not reached. A primary point of contention is MLB’s proposal to implement a salary cap, a measure the players’ association has indicated it will not accept.

The Oakland Athletics are scheduled to host the Chicago Cubs to open their spring schedule at Hohokam Park. While the schedule is set, players have expressed concerns to media outlets regarding the possibility of a lengthy lockout impacting the upcoming season. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred stated that regular meetings are occurring and expressed a goal to reach a deal to ensure baseball is played next year.
