MLB average game times increase for second consecutive year
Average game durations in Major League Baseball (MLB) have increased for the second consecutive year. Following the implementation of the pitch clock, which previously helped reduce game times to a low of 2 hours and 36 minutes, the average 9-inning game time has risen to 2 hours and 42 minutes this season.
Analysts attribute this increase primarily to the newly introduced Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) challenge. Unlike the full automation used in the KBO League, MLB utilizes human umpires who only consult computer tracking when a challenge is requested. This process, including signal verification and video display, adds approximately 61 seconds per game. Additionally, players are reportedly utilizing gaps in pitch clock regulations to manage their pace.
A similar trend is observed in the KBO League, where average game times have increased by approximately 4 minutes compared to last year, currently averaging 3 hours and 6 minutes. Both leagues face the ongoing challenge of balancing fair officiating through technology with the goal of maintaining a faster pace of play.
