The Chicago White Sox selected UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky with the first overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. Cholowsky broke down in tears at his draft party in Chandler, Arizona, and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred drew criticism for mispronouncing his surname.
Cholowsky entered the draft after a three‑year college career in which he posted a .329/.452/.636 slash line, 21 home runs and a 1.072 OPS, earning a reputation as a five‑tool prospect. He is expected to sign near the slot value of $11.35 million.
White Sox Day 1 selections also included Landon Thome (infielder, Comp‑Balance), Cole Prosek (infielder) and pitchers Joey Volchko and Eric Segura. Day 2 saw six more UCLA Bruins drafted, among them right‑hander Cal Randall (146th overall) and outfielder Will Gasparino (161st). Other notable picks across the 613‑player draft were Arizona Diamondbacks’ eighth‑round selection of Colorado Mesa alum Paul Schoenfeld and a strong South Carolina presence with 29 players drafted.
The draft concluded with teams filling their bonus pools and preparing for the signing period, which runs until July 27.
