MLB players Hagen Smith and Cam Smith emerge as key franchise assets

The Chicago White Sox are evaluating the future role of left-hander Hagen Smith following a successful 2026 season. Originally drafted fifth overall in 2024 to serve as a reliever, Smith emerged as a key bullpen arm, posting a 1.29 ERA across 18 appearances. General Manager Chris Getz indicated that the franchise views Smith as a potential starting pitcher for the future, though a decision regarding his transition to the rotation for the 2027 season has not yet been finalized.

In the Houston Astros organization, outfielder Cam Smith has been identified as the team’s top player under the age of 25. Despite a slight statistical decline in 2026 compared to his 2025 debut, Smith remains a central building block for the outfield. His role comes at a time of transition for the Astros following the departure of manager Joe Espada.
