MLB postseason ABS challenge success rate rises to 59%
The implementation of the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) in the MLB postseason has seen a rise in successful challenges compared to the regular season. Across 25 Wild Card and Division Series games, teams made 121 total challenges, with 71 resulting in successful reversals—a 59% success rate, up from 54% during the regular season.
Batter success rates specifically improved from 49% to 57%. Teams are also utilizing the system more frequently in high-stakes games, averaging 4.8 challenges per game compared to 4.3 in the regular season. Because teams only lose a challenge opportunity upon failure, strategic timing has become a critical tactical element.
Notable individual performances include catcher J.T. Realmuto, who succeeded in 5 out of 6 challenges, and batter Ronald Acuña Jr., who led all hitters with four challenges. Conversely, some players, such as Munetaka Murakami, failed in all attempts. The increased use of the technology is reshaping how players and managers approach plate appearances and pitching strategy during the playoffs.
