MLB tests outfield positioning restrictions in Arizona Fall League
Major League Baseball is experimenting with new rules in the Arizona Fall League designed to increase offensive production. The current test involves restricting how outfielders position themselves during at-bats. By requiring outfielders to play more straight up rather than adjusting for specific hitter tendencies, the league aims to increase the frequency of doubles and triples.
In addition to outfield restrictions, infielders face new positioning requirements when there are no runners on base, which limits defensive shifting. The experiment is currently limited to games played at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Arizona, due to the specific technology required to monitor player placement via video boards.
The Arizona Fall League serves as a low-stakes testing ground for potential rule changes, similar to how it previously hosted trials for the Automated Ball-Strike system. While the experiment is showing results in increasing extra-base hits, any official implementation in the major leagues remains years away.
