MLB umpires face scrutiny as ABS challenges overturn numerous calls

Major League Baseball umpires have faced significant scrutiny following multiple games where the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) frequently overturned home plate calls.

During a game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Francisco Giants, umpire Alan Porter Jr. saw 10 calls overturned out of 14 total challenges. The high volume of successful challenges led to tension, resulting in the ejection of Giants manager Tony Vitello and pitcher Logan Webb.

In a separate matchup between the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs, umpire Bill Miller had eight ball-strike calls overturned on eight consecutive challenges. This follows a trend observed throughout the 2026 season, including a record 16 combined challenges in a June game between the Brewers and Athletics, where 11 calls were overturned.
